Investment Management - A New View on your Portfolio
Investing in the stock and bond markets can at times be an emotional roller coaster. It can take a lot of intestinal fortitude to stick with the markets when times are tough. Over the years, I have worked with my clients to weather the storm and stay invested for an eventual market recovery. In fact, tremendous values may be captured when the headlines appear to be the worst. Conversely, we may wish to hold significant cash reserves in certain portfolio strategies at given times, in an attempt to avoid a significant portfolio draw-down. While no one has complete clarity over the future, and this approach is taken on a best-efforts basis, this is the type of flexibility that you will not find with many other managed approaches. |
The New View Wealth Advisory Portfolio Process
1.) Define Your Investment Objectives
We will spend a lot of time with each other up front to confirm your objectives for your portfolio and your tolerance for risk. Of course, in investing there is "no free lunch". If you want to aim for a higher rate of return, you must necessarily be willing to absorb more risk. Over time, your objectives may change, or we reach a point where we've achieved your growth goal and we want to focus more on income generation and capital preservation. We’ll strategically adjust our approach accordingly to reflect any changes to your objectives.
2.) Confirm Target Asset Allocation
After the initial planning session, I will propose an asset allocation target with an approximate mix of equities and fixed income components. We will also discuss whether you would like to implement a "domestic-focus" or "global" portfolio approach.
3.) Formulate Investment Strategy
I will then work on your initial proposed investment strategy with the asset allocation targets in mind. Clients can choose what building-blocks that want me to construct the portfolio with - either with mutual funds, ETFs, individual stocks, etc. Or, you can choose to have me build the strategy with my optimally-recommended approach, based on your scenario.
Your strategy will be custom-tailored, with consideration given to current portfolio positions and embedded gains. We will also look to understand your current and projected tax exposures that may impact investment methodology. If desired, clients can request a domestic-focus or a global portfolio approach. In addition, portfolios can also be constructed with view towards ESG preference (Environmental, Social & Governance) screening.
We will then confirm and discuss the strategy before implementation. My goal is to educate you on the portfolio rationale so you’re well-versed in the logic of the strategy.
4.) Implement Portfolio and Action Plan
After gaining agreement on the approach, will will also discuss the time-frame to implement the plan. In some case, I may recommend a dollar-cost average approach towards achieving the full portfolio targets, in attempt to reduce timing risk of investing.
5.) Performance and Strategy Review
We will stay in contact over time to meet regularly to review portfolio progress and any needed changes to the portfolio strategy. During these meetings, you will let me know about any changes in your personal life that would impact the plan that we had constructed.
